Measuring Your Dog's Stride

One of the most common questions that we get asked is, "How do I know which size of slat mill to buy for my dog?" This question is usually followed up with, "What is the weight limit on your slat mills?"

The easiest way to decide which size will best suit your dog is to measure their stride. The easiest way to do this is to lay your dog on their side. Extend the front and back legs so that both appear to be reaching. They do not need to be straight out, or rigid... Just comfortably extended. Measure in a straight line from the front paws to the back paws.

Provide wiggle room

It is important to provide wiggle room. We recommend adding 5-10 inches to your measurement. This will account for the dog drifting forward or backward while running.

Length vs. Weight

Truthfully, weight limits will always be approximate. The length of stride will be much more important when determining what size of mill to purchase for your canine companion.

Some dogs may be lightweight, but very long. So while judging by their weight, you may think, "Great! They'll fit a medium" but due to their length, they may actually require a large.

Don't forget, dogs should always be positioned within the SAFE RUNNING ZONE of the mill. When purchasing a mill, never purchase based on the total overall length. If your dog's stride is 50 inches, the safe running zone needs to be 55-60 inches long at a minimum (dog's stride, plus the 5-10 inches of wiggle room).
