Myths about Slatmills #3

✖️Myth #3✖️ Only lazy dog owners use a slatmill. ✔️Truth✔️ This myth makes a lot of assumptions about dog owners as well as the dogs that utilize slatmills. I personally think that this myth, more often than not, is nothing more than an inflammatory comment that is made by people who simply aren't educated on slatmills, or the use of slatmills. This myth completely forgets about the working K9's and sporting dogs who need to be in peak physical condition in order to work long hours, or place well in competitions. It is important to remember that for these dogs, being in peak condition mitigates the risk of injury. You would never see an out-of-shape athlete competing in the Olympics. They would not be able to keep up with their competitors and they could very easily injure themselves by pushing themselves past their limit. While these injuries could be minor, they could also easily be career-ending. The same idea applies to our sport and working dogs. This myth also ignores the fact that oftentimes, people have dogs whose energy levels far exceed their own. This can be due to physical limitations, hectic work schedules, or unexpected life events. I remember being injured in a car accident. During that time, I had limitations on how much physical activity I could participate in and quite frankly, my Malinois did not care one bit. He still wanted and needed to be trained and exercised. The slatmill became my dog and I's best friend. He did not have to go without just because I couldn't keep up with him. Furthermore, this myth ignores situations such as extreme weather. In many places in Canada and the US, we experience weather where it's either too hot or too cold to safely exercise our dogs outdoors, but that doesn't mean that our dogs simply don't need exercise during that time. Slatmills provide us with the opportunity to give our dogs exercise in a climate controlled space when it's unsafe to exercise outdoors. If you've ever held the belief that only lazy dog owners use slatmills, I would urge you to consider the points made in this post. I would also urge you to talk to people who own, or utilize slatmills. Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek out as much information as you can. Whether it's an e collar, prong collar, break stick, or slatmill... Education is key. . . . #smallbusiness #canadianmade #workingdog #slatmill #education #doglover #dogsports #fitness #goals
